The show depicts the daily lives of Dave and Vicky and their three children, Hillary, Larry, and Mike, on Long Island, New York, dealing with normal family issues. He is often portrayed as insensitive and cynical, and sometimes as a paranoid, overprotective and hypocritical bigot. Dave is constantly scolded and insulted by Larry for always picking on him. It is established toward the end of season one that Dave is the way he is because he had a father who constantly badgered him. Dave's wife Vicky is an attractive Italian-American Catholic part-time receptionist at a doctors' office. Generally levelheaded, she usually spends her time dealing with Dave's unreasonable behavior, but can be quite obnoxious herself.

Money crunch time hits Dave's household and he places the kids under strict allowance, which prompts them to come up with ways of making more money. Kenny becomes a member of the family, while Dave fights to get into a new office after a fellow co-worker suddenly passes.

His character is portrayed as tougher and more cynical than Larry's. The kids return to school, and Dave meddles in Mike's romantic affairs to stay on good terms with the father of Mike's girlfriend. In other events, Hillary gets serious about school, and Larry overhauls his style. Vicky discovers it was Dave's pot and tells him to join Pot Smoker Anonymous, where the principal that suspended him is there. When Kenny comes out of the closet, Dave encourages him to tell his parents.
Meanwhile, Vicky attempts to change Hillary's mind regarding spending the night at a boy's house. After watching "An Inconvenient Truth," Dave becomes obsessed with saving the environment. Meanwhile, Hillary prepares for a college admissions interview. After Kenny reveals he's gay, his parents kick him out. The Golds let him move in, but soon Larry becomes jealous of his closeness with Dave and Vicky.
Season 2 (2006–
The family struggles to adjust to Vicky's new job, which leaves her with less hours to be at home and more hours working. Dave and Larry continue to have tough time trying to do the things Vicky normally does. Dave's temper doesn't help and makes matters worse when Mike and Hillary end up in trouble. Meanwhile, the changes around the office force Vicky to think twice about her decision.

Three teens cause havoc for their parents, and vice versa, in a brash family-oriented sitcom that employs a confessional space for characters to vent their meant-to-be-humorous feelings. Larry and his friend, Kenny are forced into separation by their fathers when the two adults argue over their adjacent property line. Dave decides to tighten the purse strings in order to teach his family how to operate on a budget. Before long, Hillary, Mike and Larry come up with creative ways to make some extra cash.
Larry rejects the idea of being put on medication, much to the dismay of his parents. Dave finds a pill of his own hard to take when he finds out his daughter isn't "daddy's little girl" anymore. Vicky's plan for a living will meets with some resistance from Dave, and a bitter fight ensues, leaving the kids wondering if they'll all end up in divorce court.

Vicky, meanwhile, forgets to register Larry for Shakespeare camp, putting Larry in an awkward situation, while Dave and Mike take up online poker. The War at Home is an American sitcom created by Rob Lotterstein that ran from September 11, 2005, to April 22, 2007, on Fox. It follows the antics of a largely dysfunctional Long Island family. The show ran for two seasons, but was not renewed for a third season.
Dave realizes how he looks when he thinks he spots his own daughter in a just-received dirty movie. Larry is prescribed medication for social anxiety but refuses to take the pills. The show originally received negative reviews from critics, scoring a 28 out of 100 on Metacritic and 24% on Rotten Tomatoes. Dave decides he wants to start his own company after his job lowers their commission rate. Hilary decides she wants to go into the army after not being accepted to any colleges. Hillary takes matters into her own hands when Mike goes to her in search of illegal drugs.
